After an exhausting day of travel on Saturday, today we meet at the University of the District of Columbia’s auditorium for the first of our morning sessions. Steve Bell, a professor from Ball State University, is the featured professor of The Presidential Inauguration Seminar and he spent his time today discussing video clips from various news networks as well as clips from Saturday Night Live. Dana Bash, a CNN correspondent who works on “the hill,” talked primarily about her job covering Sen. McCain’s campaign as well as her being a news junkie…she certainly wasn’t alone. We also heard from Michael Genovese, who prepared us with presidential trivia and began to discuss the “Obama Phenomena.”
After our morning introductions we grabbed lunch at Potbelly’s and got on our bus tour of D.C. The monuments are something that will never get old and still amaze me. We visited Iwo Jima, World War II, Lincoln Memorial among other monuments. While visiting the Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial, we saw the Presidential Motorcade go by. Like the monuments, this is one site that still gives me chills. We also saw Marine One fly over us while we were visiting the Jefferson Memorial.
After a long first day of activities, we all headed to The Dubliner. It’s just across from Union Station and one of my favorite places to eat in the city.
